Within our property is located a School of Nature, which consists of an ecological kitchen garden of thirty square metres with tomatoes, potatoes, lettuces, pepper plants, strawberries, onions… all of which is at the disposal of our guests for free, at season (in spring and summer).
The kitchen garden is fenced and by the gate there will be a little cabin to keep the agricultural implements. It will also be part of this School of Nature the almond trees, laurels, eucalypti, osiers, pine trees, rose bushes, etc., and the 60 fruit trees which offer different varieties of pears, apples, plums, peaches, cherries, as well as different types of medlars, kaki fruits, figs, mulberry, quinces, and also nuts, hazel nuts, etc.; and one hundred olive trees complete the garden.
A pond of coloured carps surrounded by reeds and aquatic plants beside a magnificent clump of holm oaks form the core of a mini Botanic Garden of autochthonous plants of Sierra Nevada with a brief text in several languages, culminating in a viewing-point marked out by neat wooden banks, where to admire the magnificent Alpujarran sunsets.
Many other activities can be done outdoors. To inform about them, each holiday home will have a guide in English and Spanish which, besides giving information about the house or cottage (its distribution, living rules, instructions for appliances, etc., ) will include a brief history of the area, with addresses and phones of restaurants, shops, libraries, etc. These guides will also include signposted walks which can be done on foot from the holiday homes and which are as follows: Long Distance GR-7 and GR-142 (Alpujarra Path) and Short Distance like the local PR, and the circular 340 Km. walk surrounding the National Park of Sierra Nevada.
Visitors can enjoy the cultural route of the place, with its arquitecture; and will know the way of building, as well as theditches -their Muslim origin, their organisation, and one of the most famous ones, the ones of Busquistar, which lead to the Minas del Conjuro (Mines of the Spell)-, and of course the most famous bridges , like the ones of Fondales or Ferreirola, and the aljibes (underground deposits of water) such as the Aljibe de Campuzano from the 12th – 14th centuries. Visitor can also have an archaeological walk over the area and find Moorish ruins or the Castillejo de Poqueira (Little Castle of Poqueira), with its plaza de armas (square of arms) and its torre del homenaje (homage tower).
Another option is to walk round the Fountains Route – some ferruginous, some with naturally carbonated water, some simply with fresh water –, with fountains such as la Fuente de Aben Abó (the Fountain of Aben Abó), la Fuente Paula (the Fountain Paula), Aguagria (“bitter water”) or la Fuente Presidio (Fountain Prison). Each visitor can find their own route – walking, on mountain bike, on horse… – which will allow them to find numberless Alpujarras. In SULAYR RURAL we offer the possibility for our clients to contact adventure tourism enterprises.
Thanks to its strategic situation, the area is an ideal location for Granada breaks, where you can visit the Alhambra, the Generalife, the districts of the Albayzín and the Sacromonte, as well as the Cathedral, the monastery of La Cartuja, the museums; or you can simply walk about one of the most beautiful towns in the world. Sierra Nevada and its ski station are also worth a planned visit, without forgetting that just 30 Kms. far away we will be bathing in the Meditarrean, in the only tropical spot of Europe. Could somebody give more?
